Sarah Hentges

Sarah Hentges has been teaching fitness classes for 12 years in Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, and Maine. She began teaching dance aerobics, step, kickboxing, and body sculpting and then began to explore Pilates, Yoga, and Belly Dancing. While she can teach all of these classes, she most enjoys teaching “Cardio Belly Dancing” and yoga and likes to combine fitness styles. Sarah is also an Assistant Professor of American Studies at the University of Maine at Augusta (housed on the Bangor campus) and teaches English, Women’s Studies, and American Studies classes. She is working on merging her academic life with her fitness life and regularly offers workshops, participates in academic conferences, and teaches belly dancing in her Intro to Women’s Studies classes. Sarah can be reached at sarah.hentges@maine.edu.

Cardio Belly Dancing

Find the power of freedom and structure in this cardio workout that brings the movements from classic belly dance to the structure of a traditional fitness class creating a fun and challenging workout for all levels. Cardio Belly Dancing will improve posture and body awareness, reduce stress, increase flexibility, and tone the abdominals, hips, gluts, legs, upper arms, and back. Choreographed to a variety of music from popular hits to new age to hip hop and world music, this class encourages you to find the movement that feels good to you while we explore the lifts, drops, circles, snakes and shimmies that belly dancing offers.

Feminist Fitness: Power, Pleasure and Movement

Find your power. Take pleasure in movement. Come celebrate women’s movements through a fitness class that brings together the voices, music, and traditions of diverse women. This class blends belly dancing, hip hop, yoga, the Nia technique, and a variety of other dance and fitness styles to create a fun, powerful, and empowering workout. We will listen to the inspiring words of female artists and supportive men. We will take pleasure in movement. We will find power in movement. And we will be reminded of the women whose feminist movements make our movement possible.

TBA can be periodically offered as a fundraiser for scholarships for women to attend classes.
